You Earned Them. Now Activate Them: The Benefits That Do Not Turn Themselves On
Share
Here is the part of transition nobody says plainly: the benefits you earned do not turn themselves on. There is no automatic enrollment, no follow up call, no system that notices you separated and starts your healthcare. Every single benefit sits switched off until you activate it, and the veterans who lose out are not the ones who did not earn enough. They are the ones who never flipped the switches.
The order matters
Activation is a sequence, not a pile. Some benefits have deadlines that expire, some have gaps that cost you coverage, and some depend on paperwork from the ones before them. Working them in the right order means nothing lapses. Working them at random means finding out about a deadline after it passed.
Healthcare first
VA healthcare enrollment leads the sequence because a gap in coverage is the most expensive mistake on the board. One injury or one illness in an uncovered window can bury a family financially. Enroll first, then work the rest.
The insurance conversion clock is already running
Your SGLI coverage does not follow you into civilian life forever. The conversion window to VGLI or a private policy is one of the hardest deadlines in the entire transition, and missing it can mean losing coverage or requalifying at a higher cost. If you have a family counting on that policy, this is not a someday task.
GI Bill, TRICARE decisions, and TSP
Education benefits need certification before a single class gets covered. TRICARE options at separation depend on your situation and have their own election windows. And your TSP does not vanish when you leave, but it does need a decision: leave it, roll it, or manage it, each with consequences worth understanding before money moves.
Run the sequence, not your memory
We built a free fillable Benefits Activation Checklist that puts the whole activation sequence in order: VA healthcare, GI Bill, insurance conversions, TRICARE decisions, and TSP moves after separation. Clickable checkboxes, note fields, print it or work it from your phone.

You already earned every one of these. Do not leave them switched off.
