Helping Your Kids Through a Military Move: When the Whole Family Is Starting Over
Share
If you are a military spouse, you already know the part nobody outside the life understands: you do not just move. You uproot a whole family, over and over, and every time you do, your kids feel it. New house. New school. New friends to make from scratch. And when a transition out of the service is coming, the change runs even deeper, because this time the whole way of life is shifting.
Kids do not always have the words for what they are feeling during a move or a transition. They act out, or they go quiet, or they ask the same anxious questions over and over. As the parent holding it all together, you are often processing your own version of the same thing at the same time. So how do you help them through it when you are right in the middle of it yourself?
Give the feelings somewhere to go.
Children process big changes through play and through their hands long before they can process them through conversation. A drawing, a story, a quiet activity at the kitchen table opens a door that a direct "how are you feeling about the move" often cannot. The goal is not to fix the feeling. It is to give it a place to land, and to sit next to them while it does.
Name the change out loud.
Kids handle hard things better when the hard thing has a name and a shape. Talk about the new place. Walk through what stays the same, the family, the routines, the people who love them, even when the address changes. Let them ask questions, and let some answers be "I do not know yet, but we will figure it out together."
Make it a shared thing, not a solo thing.
The move is happening to the whole family, so process it as a whole family. Sit down together. Let the little ones see that the big people have feelings about it too, and that having feelings does not mean falling apart. That is the lesson that outlasts the move.
A tool built for exactly this.
This is the thinking behind New Orders, New Adventures: A Military Family's Journey, a free coloring book from Alpha VI Battalion built for military families by a military family. Guided by the Alpha VI Wolf, each page walks kids and parents through the transition from active duty to civilian life, from saying goodbye to saying hello, with illustrations about resilience, new homes, new schools, and new beginnings. It is designed to sit between a parent and a child and open the kind of conversation that is hard to start any other way.
Change is never easy. But it is a way of life for military families, and your kids can come through it resilient when they are given the space, and the tools, to process it alongside you.
