The 20 Moves Every Service Member Should Make Before EAS

Nobody hands you a checklist for getting out. Your TAP class covers the mandatory boxes, and then you sign your DD-214 and the rest is on you. The problem is that the highest-value moves in the entire transition are the ones with a clock on them, the ones that only work while you are still in uniform, when the resources are free and the timing is still on your side.

That is exactly what The Pre-EAS Playbook covers. It is a free guide built around 20 moves across five areas: education and training, money and benefits, records and admin, professional presence, and the daily-life skills that keep money in your pocket after the uniform comes off.

A few of the moves inside:

SkillBridge is the best deal in transition.

You can spend your last 180 days working a civilian internship while still drawing full military pay and benefits. The strong programs fill early, so this is a twelve-months-out conversation, not a six-months-out one.

Do the terminal leave math before you sell back a day.

Sold-back leave pays base pay only, taxed, no allowances. Terminal leave pays your full check with BAH and BAS while you are already home and can legally be working a civilian job. On a full leave balance the difference runs into the thousands, and most people decide it in five minutes at an admin counter without ever seeing the numbers.

File your VA claim before you are out.

The BDD program lets you file 90 to 180 days before separation so the rating lands right after your EAS instead of a year into civilian life. The fuel for any claim is documentation, so chase down every appointment and every buddy statement while the witnesses are still in the same building.

Back up everything off government systems.

The day your CAC dies, your records die with it. Awards, evals, orders, and multiple copies of your DD-214, saved somewhere you control, before that day comes.

The full guide breaks all 20 down with worked examples, a fillable clearance tracker, and a one-page Pre-EAS Punch List you can print and run. It is free, it is built from real experience, and it is the checklist the briefing never gave you.
