Things They Don't Tell You When You Follow God Closely — God Will Promote You Out of Comfort

This is post 10 in Things They Don't Tell You When You Follow God Closely, a weekly Sunday series from Alpha VI Battalion.
They Did Not Tell You Promotion Feels Like Disruption First
You were settled. Things were working. Not perfectly, but functionally. You had figured out how to navigate the current environment and the comfort of knowing the terrain was its own kind of peace.
Then God started disrupting it.
The thing that used to satisfy stopped satisfying. The place that used to feel like home started feeling like a waiting room. The relationships, the routines, the role you had grown comfortable in started feeling like they were built for a smaller version of you than the one currently trying to operate inside them.
That discomfort is not a problem with you. It is a signal from God that you have outgrown where you are and the next place requires you to leave this one.
Comfort Is Not the Goal
The cultural version of a blessed life is a comfortable one. Peace, stability, predictability, enough of everything and not too much disruption. That is a reasonable human preference. It is not always God's agenda for the person He is developing for something significant.
Abraham was comfortable in Ur. God told him to leave without telling him where he was going. The discomfort of the unknown was the first step toward everything God had promised him. The comfort was not the destination. It was the starting point.
If you are uncomfortable where you are and nothing has gone wrong to cause it, consider that something has gone right. Consider that you have grown to the edge of what this season can produce in you and God is preparing you for the next one.
The Military Taught You This Already
You got comfortable in a duty station. You knew the terrain, the people, the unwritten rules of that particular environment. And then PCS orders came and you had to pack everything and learn a new terrain all over again.
You did not interpret the orders as punishment. You interpreted them as the next assignment. The discomfort of leaving the known for the unknown was the price of the mission moving forward.
God operates on orders too. When the discomfort comes, ask what the next assignment is rather than how to restore the comfort you had.
Move When God Moves
The Israelites followed a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. When the cloud moved, they moved. When it stopped, they stopped. The moment they were comfortable enough to stop following and start settling was the moment the journey stalled.
Stay mobile in your faith. Stay willing to move when God signals the next season. The promotion is on the other side of the discomfort, not on the other side of finding a way to be comfortable again where you are.
Stay in it, Light Bringer.
