Before You File: The VA Claim Prep Checklist Every Veteran Needs

Nobody walks you through a VA claim. You get told to file, handed a stack of forms, and left to figure out the rest on your own. The people who come out of that process with a fair result almost always have one thing in common: they walked in organized. The ones who struggle usually walked in scrambling.

The VA Claim Prep Checklist is a free field card built to get you organized before you file. It does not name ratings, dollar figures, or eligibility rules, because that is not what wins a claim. What wins is documentation, evidence, and showing up prepared. This card walks you through all of it.

Gather your records.

Your service treatment records, personnel records, and any private medical records tied to the conditions you plan to claim. Request complete copies and save them somewhere you control, because the day your access ends, so does easy access to your file.

Build your evidence.

List every condition, note when it started and how it connects to service, and gather buddy statements from witnesses while they are still reachable. If someone was there when you got hurt, get their statement in writing before everyone scatters. Two years later it is a hundred times harder.

Document the impact.

Note how each condition affects your work, your sleep, your mood, and your daily life. Keep dated entries over time instead of relying on memory later. Write it the way you would explain it to a doctor: specific and honest.

Prep for your C&P exam.

Confirm the date and location, review your own notes before you go, and plan to describe your worst days, not just an average one. Show up early and answer every question directly.

The full checklist covers all five phases with fillable checkboxes you can work on your phone or print and run with a pen. It was built by an Iraq War veteran and his wife, both rated 100 percent permanent and total, who have fought the VA rating system themselves.

Download the VA Claim Prep Checklist free. When you are ready for the full documentation system, the VA Disability Claim Logbook and C&P Journal System takes it the rest of the way, also available as a paperback on Amazon.

Brotherhood Never Ends.
