Check on Your People: The Most Important Thing You Can Do This Week
No one fights alone. Remember the fallen. Support the living. Preserve the lessons. Strengthen the Pack.
There is a veteran you have not talked to in a while.
You know exactly who it is. The name came into your head when you read that sentence. Someone from your unit, your base, your deployment. Someone you ran with, lived with, and trusted with your life in a context that most people will never understand. Someone you meant to call and did not.
This Wolfpack Wednesday has one message: call them today.
Why People Stop Reaching Out
It is almost never because they do not care. It is because time passed, and the longer it goes, the more awkward it feels to break the silence. It is because civilian life absorbed everyone and the pace of it does not leave much room for maintaining connections that require effort. It is because some people assume no news is good news and their people are probably fine.
Sometimes they are fine. Sometimes they are not fine at all and the silence on both ends is the most dangerous thing in the room.
The military community has a specific vulnerability here. The bonds formed in service are deep and real and built on shared experience that does not translate well to the outside. When veterans separate, they often lose that network all at once. The structure is gone. The daily contact is gone. The sense of belonging to something bigger is gone. What is left is a civilian world that is glad to have you back but does not quite know what to do with you.
For some veterans that transition goes smoothly. For others, the isolation that follows is the beginning of a longer spiral that nobody sees coming because nobody was close enough to notice.
What Checking In Actually Looks Like
It does not have to be a long call. It does not require a reason or an occasion. It can be as simple as hey, I was thinking about you today. How are you actually doing.
The word actually matters. Not how are you in passing, but actually. It signals that you want a real answer. Most people, when someone creates that opening genuinely, will walk through it.
If they say they are fine, that is okay. You can take it at face value and keep the door open. You can say something like I am around if anything ever comes up. Sometimes that sentence plants a seed that takes weeks to grow into a call that mattered.
If they say something more, listen. Do not problem solve immediately. Do not minimize. Do not compare. Just listen and let them know you are not going anywhere.
The Pack Takes Care of Its Own
This is not a metaphor. It is a practice. It requires action, not intention.
The Wolfpack Wednesday series exists because there are things the veteran community faces that the general public does not fully understand and that do not always make the news. Burn pit exposure. Gulf War Illness. Caregiver burnout. Veteran homelessness. PTSD. Moral injury. Suicide. These are real and they are happening to real people inside communities that are often geographically scattered and socially isolated after service.
The most consistent protective factor in every piece of research on veteran wellbeing is connection. Not a program. Not a hotline. Real human connection with people who know your history and care about your future.
You are that person for someone in your network. You just need to reach out.
Do It Right Now
Put a name in your phone. Send a text. Make a call. It costs nothing and it could be everything.
If you are the one who needs to be checked on, that is okay too. Reach out to someone in the Pack. If there is nobody available in your immediate circle, the Veterans Crisis Line is staffed around the clock by people who are there specifically for this. Dial 988 and press 1.
